Will UNDER THE NEVER SKY become a movie?
I wish I could say a resounding yes, but the answer is actually maybe. The film rights to the trilogy have been optioned by Warner Bros. Studios, which means they are developing the story, which is a fact that still blows my mind.
When will Book Three be released?
Book Three, INTO THE STILL BLUE, will release early next year—most likely January. I don’t have a specific date yet, but I’ll announce it here as soon as I do.
How do I get a signed and/or personalized copy of the book?
Contact Rakestraw Books at (925) 837-7337 with your information (payment, personalization, address) and they will ship it to you.
What are your favorite books?
I grew up on high fantasy, such as C. S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. More recently, I have loved Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy. I devour George RR Martin’s books. I reread Persuasion by Jane Austen every year. I’m obsessed with Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo. I was supremely moved by Dave Eggers’ A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. I put Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game into the hands of everyone who asks me for a thrilling book. I thought Catherine Fisher’s Incarceron was terrifically original and dark. Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games blew my mind. And then there’s Harry Potter… I could go on. Sigh. Books are awesome.
Who was harder/more fun to write, Aria or Perry?
Aria was tougher at first. I don’t really know why. I just totally channeled Perry right from the beginning. At one point I had the story written entirely in his POV. I’m really glad I incorporated Aria’s voice, and she’s as fun/difficult for me to write as Perry now. It just took me a little longer to find her.
How long did it take you to write UNDER THE NEVER SKY? What about the other books?
NEVER SKY took a year to develop and draft, and then six months to revise. EVER NIGHT took a year to write and revise, as well as the last book, STILL BLUE.
What advice do you have to aspiring writers?
Read. Write. Repeat. And don’t give up! Writing a book takes lots of work and dedication. You have to love it enough to not let the road-blocks stop you. If you’re interested in advice on writing craft, head over to the YA Muses, a blog I share with my writing friends.
Can I interview you?
I wish I could accept every interview request that comes in, but I need to keep my schedule focused on writing. I do try to accommodate as many requests as possible. If you are interested in interviewing me, please check out my review policy for more information.
